In the middle of the NCAA’s March Madness, the Main Line celebrated its own version of “March Madness” on Sunday, March 29th at The Haverford School. AIDS Alive hosted its 11th annual Jim “Bo” Boyle Hoops for Hope basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 8-14 from over 30 area schools. Over 70 participants had the opportunity to learn new drills and skills while rubbing elbows with prominent area coaches and players.
St. Joe’s University’s Coach Phil Martelli opened the clinic with words of encouragement and got everyone excited to play ball! Along with Coach Martelli, Denise Dillon, head women’s coach at Drexel, ran a defensive drill; and Sue Moran, assistant coach of the Lady Hawks, shared tips on scoring. Dave Duke, Assistant Coach to Fran Dunphy’s Temple Owls, led a cheer for the Wildcats as he addressed the players, and Steve Cloran, Head Coach at the Haverford School, helped to organize the courts.
In addition to teaching basketball skills and increasing AIDS awareness, Hoops for Hope raises money for scholarships to a unique camp for children who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
Scores of local co-sponsors and businesses came together once again this year to create an afternoon of fun-raising, skill building and enjoying a bit of community spirit. The hottest auction item of the day was an NCAA basketball autographed by Jay Wright’s 2008-2009 Villanova Men’s Basketball Team!
A special thank you goes out to:
